HLM Architects are reducing

our Carbon Footprint

This means we are committed to calculating and reducing our impact on climate change  year on year in line with the global goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

This has been independently validated by "Go Climate Positive".

About us

HLM Architects are committed to a more sustainable future.

Our aim is simple: to deliver the highest performing buildings which have a positive impact on the lives of those who use them, and a positive impact on the world for future generations.

Targets

We are committed to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2040, reducing our actual emissions by 90% and offsetting the residual emissions by removing greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere.

Actions

We have committed to reducing emissions over the next year by:

  1. Begin offsetting 10% of carbon emissions through accredited schemes where carbon is removed from the atmosphere.
  2. Formalise policy to deliver on carbon emissions reductions associated with business travel.
  3. Develop an equipment procurement policy and roadmap to quantify carbon reductions over the next 10 years with an interim 5 year target.
  4. Carry out a lighting audit to determine carbon saving and implement programme of LED lighting replacement such that all studios have LED lighting by 2023.
  5. Align ISO14001 data collection and reporting to the Carbon Reduction Plan.
  6. Include carbon impact of new opportunities in Go / No Go decision making.
  7. Implement EV Salary Sacrifice Scheme with the aim of reducing carbon emissions associated with business travel and employee commuting by 50% (97 tCO2e) by 2030.
  8. Start recording and report on home working emissions.
  9. Develop a methodology for calculating and reporting emissions avoided on our projects for both operational and embodied carbon.
  10. Support staff who want to upgrade their dwellings through general and technical advice reducing carbon emissions associated with home working.
  11. Switch our Glasgow, Belfast, London and Sheffield studios to a renewable energy tariff in 2022 reducing carbon by 33.4 tCO2e compared to 2019.
  12. Consider relocating our studios to more energy efficient premises with no fossil fuels or agree retrofit plan with landlord.

Activities

Reduced Business Travel

A reduction of 301 tCO2e was achieved through a reduction in business travel in the 2020-2021 period. Whilst some of this will naturally come back post pandemic we aim to consolidate some of the reduction through an increased use of video conferencing.

Smartblend working

A further reduction of 40 tCO2e was achieved by a shift to working from home in the 2020-2021 period. Whilst some of this will naturally come back post pandemic we aim to consolidate some of the reduction through an increased take up of flexible working.

‘Go Climate Positive’ is a membership programme that makes it easy for businesses to calculate, reduce and offset their carbon emissions. It is designed to adhere to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and Corporate Value Chain Standard.
