The Challenge
Based in the village of Overbury, Gloucestershire, The Name Label Company is a small, family-run business employing five people. They supply custom name labels for children’s items and for clothing used in care home and nursing settings where laundering happens centrally.
Already ISO 14001 certified for environmental management, business owners Matt and Emma Busby were eager to deepen their commitment to sustainability and focus specifically on their climate impact. Their goal: achieve certified Carbon Neutral status.
They first encountered Go-Positive through a free workshop, “How to Green Your Business”, where they were introduced to our six-step process for building a more sustainable company. The first step (Know Your Footprint) inspired them to take immediate action.
“It really opened our eyes to what we could achieve and the numerous benefits to our business. We were so fired up following the workshop we invited Eoin to come in and advise how we could take our sustainability journey further.”
Our Solution
Go-Positive worked closely with the team to calculate the company’s full carbon footprint using the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Corporate and Value Chain Standards. Their footprint for the previous year was calculated at 36.7 tonnes of CO₂e.
The largest contributors to their emissions were the embedded carbon in purchased materials, transportation of products to customers, and the processing of waste. With this data in hand, we set reduction targets that were both meaningful and achievable. Initial targets included a 5% reduction in waste and encouraging employees to reduce commuting emissions through cycling and car sharing.
We then helped The Name Label Company offset their remaining footprint to achieve Carbon Neutral status. This involved two key components:
Accounting for the carbon-saving benefits of a newly developed iron-on label technology that significantly reduces ironing time (and thus energy use) compared to traditional products.
Investing in certified carbon offset projects across Cambodia, India, and Europe. All projects were independently verified by the Gold Standard®, and the credits were officially retired to ensure a transparent and permanent record.
As part of our process, The Name Label Company received a unique certification page and Carbon Neutral certificate. Their emissions data, offset activity, and future commitments are now transparently published online.
Matt and Emma are rightly proud of the Carbon Neutral status of their business, but they know that this is just a step on the journey towards achieving their ambition of going Climate Positive. We are delighted to be a part of that journey with them.
The Results
The Name Label Company is now officially Carbon Neutral. By combining internal emissions reductions with certified offsetting, they’ve achieved an important milestone on their sustainability journey—one that aligns with their environmental values and enhances their reputation with customers.
Their efforts are also future-focused. Matt and Emma see Carbon Neutrality not as an endpoint, but as a stepping stone towards becoming truly Climate Positive. The partnership with Go-Positive has given them a clear roadmap, robust certification, and the confidence to take the next step.
